Unethical Administration

Why is it that we are now faced with a situation were we are forced remind those who should already know, that it is important to tell the truth when you are in a position of power given by the public of the United States.

Of course I am talking about Lewis “Scooter” Libby. According to Libby’s earlier conversations, he was not handing out new information about a CIA operative but was instead passing on information that the some reporters were already circulating, namely the identity of the CIA operative which turned out to be Valerie Wilson.

If you consider the fact that CIA agent is working in defense of our country for our own national security as it were, then is it not logical that “outing” an under cover agent is an act against the security of our country. There is a word for this, TREASON.

Why is Lewis Libby only being charged with obstruction of justice, making false statements, and perjury. Although the news channels are saying that these charges carry a maximum sentence of u to 30 yrs, does anyone actually believe that he’ll spend even a decade in prison. The chances are that he will not spend more than a year or two if he even gets convicted. I would not be surprised if there was a “tecnicallity” that causes the case to get thrown out.

My biggest concern is the ethical state of our leaders in Washington. Being honest and of good moral character was the only way to become a leader of our country at one time. Now it seems that the ability to lie, cheat, and steal without getting caught are the qualities that will get you to positions of power.

We as a people should not be put in the position of forcing our leaders to honest. Integrity should be a trait ingrained in each of our leaders from the moment they conceive of trying for an office of public trust. We pay these people through our taxes to do good for our nation and to govern us, not the other way around.

Here is a quick list.

Tom Delay: White House Republican Leader- Indicted for criminal conspiracy, laundering money for campaign contributions.

Bill Frist: Senate Republican Leader- under investigation by SEC fro insider trading law violations.

Karl Rove: White House Deputy Chief of Staff- Under investigation by Congress for his connection to Lewis Libby and the release of Valerie Wilson’s CIA operations.

Dick Cheney: Vice President- Past CEO of Halliburton, investigated for deals with Iraq while he was CEO.

There are of course more Bush administration officials that are under scrutiny for one reason or another but I think my point is made. These people should not be held to a lower standard and allowed to return to service after a small reprimand. In fact they should be held to higher standard and faced with harsher penalties for their betrayals of the American people.

unethical yes, but I belive that libby suffers more from a lack of morality than ethics. I'm refering to his "but they were doing it too!" statements. An acceptable excuse when your four, not after. The "If I go down i'm taking someone with me" speech is just wrong. Once I would like to see a politician say "yes I did this and I stand behind it" or at least admit that they made a mistake instead they pass the buck and cover there ass. These problems exsist, I belive, because of a lack of morality; the basis for ethical decision making.
